Control line stunt contest August 21 s t and 22 nd , help is always needed see Rich Malik. Let's make it a great event. I believe I am available that weekend for the first time in years!
Rich Malik is looking for .25 to.30 gas engines for trainer control line planes. Please check your stash and let Rich know. Just another way to get people into our great hobby.
Club news:
If you have email and have not filled out the online form on our website please do right away. This is pretty much our new roster and we need updated info. It is private and only available to members! If you dont know how let me know!
I have been flying with my longtime friend and recent member after a 20 year, at least, hiatus. He is about 7 tenths of a mile from Livingston Co Rc club. Very nice place. They have a very extensive training program including training the trainers. I am looking into their program and see what good things we can use for ours.
I received a call from Casey Veitengruber who lives here in Livonia. He got my number from the newsletter. I had him out at the field a couple weeks ago and he flew my Electristar on the buddy box and did great. He is looking for a plane right now and hope to have him as a member soon. If he comes out now you know who he is. On that same note, I went to Akron Ohio a couple of weeks ago and aquired two more Electristars. I am in the process of making them usable with a 5 cell pack and new speed control. One is going to Cary Archer out in Howell and the other will be in the fleet. I love to use it for buddy box demonstrations. It did about 16 flights at the Fathers Day fun fly.
Training is in session:
Wednesday evenings. I have not been able to get out in the last couple of weeks. I am only aware of one trainee right now. If you need a hand feel free to get ahold of me and I will make a plane date with you to fly. This goes for anyone that is rusty or needs a new plane checked out. Less prep to come out and fly everyones planes ya know! I have purchased several copies of every book that Dave Scott from 1st U.S. R/C flight school in Wisconsin, publishes. These are outstanding. I recommend to every new pilot to purchase one week to solo. It is also great for any pilot, especially those training other people. They are 20 bucks which is what I paid for them. Dave is generous with a club and volume discount. I will have them at the meeting.
Old airplane notes:
I have been flying the heck out of our ACE 4-60 with a 70 Surpass on it. I am pretty sure it is over 20 years old. I had it sitting on the kitchen table and noticed a wrinkle in the covering below the horizontal stabilizer. I moved the stab around and noticed the wrinkle moved and the glue joint at the front of the stab to the turtle deck was loose. After cutting away the covering and forcing the stab some more to reveal the weakness I discovered the right side under the stab cracked too. Well, it is from my one and only bad crash that broke the fuse in half. My pit crew, my dad, put it back together. The fuse sides are plywood and epoxy was used to glue it back together. Apparently it got brittle and broke. Good thing I found it because I have little doubt it would have been catastrophic. I can't get inside to reenforce the sides so I will use epoxy and some strips of glass cloth. It won't be perfect but you can't see it anyway. Bottom line is be diligent looking over your planes.
Safety note:
Please police your own guests. It is not comfortable or safe to have large planes coming over the safety line area of the field. There is a 25 ft no fly area between where we stand and the runway. Those that violate the rules are not welcome. Thanks!
Hobbico/ any ARF issue:
Mike McVicar has the Hobbico 60 size trainer. Couple weeks back he was hearing flutter, we thought it was aileron due to the linkage being a little sloppy although no worse than anything else I have seen. Well after I told him it would be a good idea to bring it in. Just one more lap resulted in the elevator hinges removing themselves from the stationary part of the stab. He cut throttle and kept the wings level and it glided to a rough landing out in the farm field. Broken prop and a hole in the wing was the only damage. I never think much about this as all our kit planes have pinned hinges. The hinges were “prehinged” not requiring installation. It was apparent there was not enough CA used on the hinges. The hinges looked like scraps of material too. SOOOO the bottom line is my new acronym for and ARF plane is “Almost Ready to Fail”. Tug a bit on the control surfaces once in awhile and check those hinges. I like the old fashioned ones I can pin myself. The other issue is CA hinges I think have their place in electric planes for sure. There is virtually zero vibration. Nitro is a whole nother ball game.
***A couple notes from the AMA safety code***
I will abide by thi s S afety Code and all rules establi shed for the flying s ite I use.
